Leonid Lamm: From Utopia to Virtuality features essays by leading Western and Russian scholars, including Brandon Taylor (Professor Emeritus of History of Art, University of Southampton, and currently Visiting Tutor in History and Theory of Art at the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford), Eleanor Heartney (New York-based art critic and author of numerous books and articles about contemporary art. Her work has appeared in ARTnews, Art in America, the Washington Post and the New York Times), Irina Karasik (Senior Curator, The State Russian Museum), Yevgenia Petrova (Deputy Director for Academic Research, The State Russian Museum), and playwright Igor Gelbach.
The book also includes Lamm’s own recollections about his life in the Soviet Union under the Soviet leaders from Stalin to Brezhnev. Describing his meetings and friendship with such important Russian avant-garde artists as Vladimir Tatlin and Solomon Telingater, as well as with the avant-garde architects Yakov Chernikhov and Konstantin Melnikov, Lamm discusses the impact of works by these and other experimental artists on his artistic career. In his recollections, Lamm also focuses on his imprisonment right before his emigration to the US in 1982. And finally, Lamm evaluates his long and productive artistic career in the US where he lived for 35 years.
The 282 page book features 316 color illustrations of Leonid Lamm's work, from 1946-2008, in a wide range of media including paintings, sculpture, assemblages, collages, photography, and works on paper.
The book includes an extensive bibliography and index.
